Calor Calor

Calor – the UK’s leading supplier of LPG – is delighted to be working with Climate Clinic to help address the urgent and pressing issue of climate change and carbon reduction.

In particular Calor is working with rural communities and those living off mains gas to help them reduce their carbon footprint. We are also helping to address the matter of rural fuel poverty – a complex issue and one often misunderstood. The main tactic we are employing to drive carbon reduction is the more efficient use of energy; both in terms of more traditional fuels and in the increased proliferation of renewables where practical.

It has been proven that LPG has the lowest carbon emissions out of all the fossil fuels available to those living off mains. However, LPG is but one of many solutions provided by Calor to help rural households and businesses reduce their carbon footprint. The introduction of micro Combined Power and Heat (mCHP) units marks an important step forward for low carbon onsite electricity and heat generation. As well as the introduction of high efficiency modern gas condensing boilers, which are significantly more efficient than older boilers.

Going forward, biopropane could make a big difference in helping reduce the carbon intensity of energy in the countryside. It’s not just electricity which has the potential to be decarbonised – it’s gas as well. .

Further to this Calor, in partnership with National Energy Action and the Rural Community Action Network, has launched FREE (Future of Rural Energy in England) which will offer independent information and advice to off-mains households and communities to help them improve their energy efficiency and carbon footprint.

These are the latest steps being undertaken by Calor, but as a company we have a long association with the fight against climate change. At the Kyoto conference in 1997 We were proud to share a platform with Greenpeace to campaign against the issue of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). These are the powerful greenhouse gases used in air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. We are currently working with the Woodland Trust to help increase the UK's area of native woodland through their MOREwoods scheme - a project aiming to plant 500,000 trees a year.

Fairtrade Fairtrade Foundation

The Fairtrade Foundation is pleased to support the Climate Clinic in their efforts to take urgent action on climate change. Two billion people – a third of humanity – still survive on less than $2 a day. Unfair trade rules keep them in poverty, but they also face the global challenges of food shortages and climate change. By buying products with the FAIRTRADE Mark shoppers can be assured that disadvantaged producers and workers in developing countries receive a fair and stable price for their products which covers the costs of sustainable production and a Fairtrade premium for investment in economic, social and environmental projects.

“We have planted trees and reduced the amount of pesticides we use by 80% in the last ten years. We’ve used the Fairtrade premium to buy environmentally friendly ovens to dry our coffee. These are powered by coffee skins and macadamia nut shells, which mean we no longer need to cut up to 50 acres of forest every year.

Fairtrade has helped us to improve our environmental protection. Fairtrade isn’t just about helping farmers in poor countries; by helping to protect forests, fields and rivers it helps us all to respond to climate change. We have had to change the way we grow and process coffee to meet Fairtrade standards, and have learnt about more sustainable production methods this way"

— Gerardo Camacho, Coffee Farmer, Coocafe, Costa Rica

The Fairtrade system includes environmental standards as part of producer certification and require producers to work to protect the natural environment. Producers are encouraged to minimise the use of energy, especially energy from non-renewable sources. By choosing Fairtrade products, you can help producers preserve their own environment as well as have a positive social benefit in their community.
