Description: |
Finance, its type and availability, will make or break new economic sectors. In the midst of a recession and in the face of new challenges like climate change and the peak and decline of global oil production, the UK must manage a great transition to a new kind of economy. There is ample potential for the switch to a genuinely clean energy system, while the failure to do so will leave our energy security vulnerable and could add billions to the UK’s trade deficit. The Great Transition to a new economy calls for root and branch reform of finance. Billions has been spent bailing out the banks, yet they are still failing to meet the needs of the productive economy. We have a once-in a lifetime opportunity to reform the provision of finance in the UK, making banks serve the needs of their customers, and the thousands of small businesses that pound for pound deliver more value to the UK economy while also unlocking the investment needed to kick-start new low-carbon economy for the UK.
